All Claude Code Buddy Species — Complete List & Reference Guide (2026)
[01]All 18 Claude Code Buddy Species at a Glance
Claude Code Buddy ships with 18 unique species, each generated deterministically from your identity string. Whether you're trying to find out what species you rolled, researching before you reroll, or comparing buddies with teammates, this is your complete reference.
Every species belongs to one of four categories: Animal, Creature, Object, or Mythical. Each has a designated peak stat — the one stat that can reach 100 at Legendary rarity — plus a set of personality tags that define how it behaves in your terminal.

[02]Species by Category
🐾 Animal (12 species)
The largest category. Animal species span the full range of stats and personalities — from the chaos-fuelled Goose to the endlessly patient Turtle. If you rolled an animal, you're in good company: they're the most common type and have the widest variety of peak stats.
Full list: Axolotl · Owl · Cat · Goose · Rabbit · Octopus · Duck · Penguin · Turtle · Snail · Capybara · Chonk
✨ Mythical (2 species)
The rarest category by design. Only Dragon and Ghost are Mythical. Rolling either one is already impressive — a Legendary Mythical is the ultimate flex. Dragon rules Debugging; Ghost owns Chaos.

🔧 Object (3 species)
The unconventional trio. Robot, Mushroom, and Cactus defy the expected "cute animal" format. Robot is the purest Debugging specialist; Mushroom surprises with Wisdom; Cactus has the sharpest Snark. Object species tend to have extremely distinctive ASCII art.
Full list: Robot · Mushroom · Cactus
👾 Creature (1 species)
The lone wildcard. Blob is the only Creature-category species. Its amorphous form and Wisdom peak stat make it uniquely philosophical — a formless being that somehow understands everything. Blob has a small but devoted fan base.

[03]Species by Peak Stat
Your buddy's peak stat is the one attribute that can reach 100 at Legendary rarity. For everyday stats, all species use the same ranges — but the peak stat creates a specialisation that defines the species' identity. Here's how the 18 species break down:
🔍 DEBUGGING (3 species) — Dragon · Axolotl · Robot
The most practically useful peak stat. Debugging buddies are your code quality companions. Dragon brings mythical prestige; Axolotl brings aquatic charm; Robot brings mechanical precision. All three are among the most sought-after species.
🧠 WISDOM (4 species) — Owl · Octopus · Mushroom · Blob
Knowledge and depth. Wisdom species feel like advisors — they don't just do the work, they understand why. Owl is the iconic sage; Octopus the flexible polymath; Mushroom the mysterious oracle; Blob the formless philosopher.
😤 SNARK (3 species) — Cat · Cactus · Chonk
Maximum personality. Snark species have the most attitude. Cat judges your code quietly; Cactus does it with visible spines; Chonk does it with pure rotund confidence. If you want a companion with opinions, these are your picks.
🌀 CHAOS (3 species) — Goose · Ghost · Rabbit
Unpredictable energy. Chaos species are the wildcards that keep sessions interesting. Goose is pure aggression; Ghost adds supernatural mystery; Rabbit brings hyperactive speed. High-Chaos buddies are beloved by the community for entertainment value.
⏳ PATIENCE (5 species) — Duck · Penguin · Turtle · Snail · Capybara
The most patient category — fitting, since it has the most members. These species are steady, calming presences. Duck is cheerful; Penguin resilient; Turtle ancient; Snail persistent; Capybara the zen master. Patience is underrated: a max-Patience Capybara in the terminal is genuinely calming.
[04]Rarity and How It Affects Your Species
Every species can appear at any rarity — Common through Legendary. Rarity determines your buddy's stat floor (minimum base stats) and how impressive it looks at peak. The five tiers are:
- Common (60%) — stats start at 5; any species
- Uncommon (25%) — stats start at 15
- Rare (10%) — stats start at 25
- Epic (4%) — stats start at 35
- Legendary (1%) — stats start at 50; peak stat can reach 100
A Legendary Dragon with 100 Debugging is theoretically the most powerful buddy in the system. But a Common Blob with 5 Wisdom still has infinite philosophical energy. Rarity scales the numbers — the species' soul is constant.
On top of rarity, any species can roll Shiny (1% chance independently). Shiny adds a rare visual marker. A Legendary Shiny of any species is a 1-in-10,000 combination. Want to know your exact odds? Check our rarity deep dive.
[05]How to Find Out Your Species
Your Claude Code Buddy species is determined by a deterministic algorithm that hashes your identity string. The simplest way to discover your buddy is to use the Buddy Checker — enter your Claude Code UUID or username and see your species, rarity, stats, and cosmetics instantly.
Don't have your UUID? We have a full guide to finding your UUID on every platform (Mac, Windows, Linux, cloud IDEs).
Once you know your species, head to its detail page for full lore, stat breakdowns, and ASCII art frames. Each of the 18 species pages includes frequently asked questions about that specific buddy type — everything from "why does my cat look smug?" to "how do I maximise my Dragon's Debugging stat?"
Want to compare your buddy against a teammate's? Use the Species Index — it has filtering by category, peak stat, and a side-by-side comparison tool for up to three species at once.
[06]Which Species Is the Rarest?
Every species has an equal probability of appearing — there's no species-level rarity weighting. What makes certain species feel rare is the combination of low-probability rarity tiers and the sheer variety of 18 possible outcomes.
That said, community surveys consistently show certain species are seen less often simply because their personality or name is less visible. Species that get the most "wow" reactions when revealed:
- Dragon — mythical prestige, maximum visual impact
- Ghost — only two mythical species exist; Ghost feels exclusive
- Axolotl — real-world internet fame amplifies its terminal version
- Robot — the most on-brand species for an AI coding tool
- Blob — so unusual that a Legendary Blob generates genuine surprise
Remember: since species probability is uniform, if you've talked to 18 teammates, statistically you've already seen representatives of every species. The "rarest" buddy is always the one you haven't found yet.
